What is web design? To me it's the joining of visual beauty and function. A website that will compel a visitor to remain interested in the content on the page needs to be first visually appealing. If the website looks disorganized or clumsy, then the visitor will not consider the site to be professional and will bounce out of the site. So, first the objective is to keep the customer interested. Second, shout the message loudly and clearly. The function of the site is to generate an action. Whether that is a sale, a contact form, or just reading more than one article, the function of the site is critical. It's why you created the site in the first place. When I visualize a website I think of the function first. If the site had only one element on the page, what would the visitor do? And then I build around that one element. In this way, the function is defined and then the appeal can be shaped and improved and evaluated against the function. This, I believe, is the formula for success.
